The plan involved an amphibious attack across the river. Early that morning, the artillery at Fort Wellington in Prescott commenced a bombardment of Ogdensburg, signaling the start of the operation. Lethbridge's troops embarked in 25 bateaux and 2 gunboats, aiming to seize the American defenses. The American forces, commanded by Benjamin Forsyth and Sheriff Joseph York, included the 1st Rifle Regiment, New York Militia, and the Ogdensburg Volunteers. They were equipped with an iron 12-pounder cannon and a brass 6-pounder cannon, manned by Sheriff York and Lieutenant Church. As Lethbridge's boats crossed the river, the Americans opened fire, resulting in a fierce exchange of cannon and musket fire. The assault resulted in the deaths of three Canadians, including Private Mott of the 1st Leeds Militia, with over ten others wounded. The failure of the assault led to severe consequences for Lethbridge; General Prevost stripped him of his command and reassigned him to a desk job in Montreal, while Colonel Thomas Pearson took over command at Prescott. Despite the setback, hostilities continued along the St. Lawrence River. In February 1813, Forsyth's riflemen conducted another raid, this time targeting Elizabethtown. Assault on Ogdensburg

On November 29, 1813, before dawn, Floyd's militia divided into two columns to encircle Autossee. However, complications arose that hindered their initial strategy. Floyd discovered a second, smaller Red Stick settlement, Tallasee, which necessitated a redistribution of his forces. Additionally, McIntosh was unable to block a western escape route due to the deep, frigid waters of the Tallapoosa River, forcing him to redirect his men to Calebee Creek to cover northern exits. Most critically, a Red Stick hunter spotted the approaching militia and alerted the townspeople, allowing them to evacuate women and children and send for reinforcements. Despite these setbacks, Floyd's troops, equipped with superior muskets and cannons, launched a swift assault on Autossee. They quickly overwhelmed the village, setting it ablaze. While many Creek warriors fled, some chose to remain and fight, ultimately perishing in the flames. The battle resulted in the deaths of approximately 200 to 250 Red Sticks, including the kings of Autossee and Tallasee, while Floyd's forces suffered only 11 fatalities and a handful of wounded, including Floyd himself. In total, around 400 houses were destroyed in the two towns. With their supplies dwindling, Floyd's militia retreated to Fort Mitchell. On their way back, they faced harassment from Creek warrior Paddy Walsh, who managed to kill an additional five men. Upon reaching the fort, the militia regrouped for two months, preparing for another offensive that would culminate in the Battle of Calebee Creek in late January 1814.

Battle of Autossee

In the lead-up to the Bashi Skirmish, tensions were escalating between American settlers and the Creek Nation in the southeastern United States. The conflict was fueled by territorial disputes and increasing hostilities, prompting American forces to take action against Creek warriors. In early October 1813, a group of American horsemen set out from St. Stephens, aiming to secure their position and travel towards Fort Easley, which was critical for their strategic operations in the region. On October 4, 1813, a contingent of 25 white horsemen, led by Colonel William McGrew, advanced towards Bashi Creek, a waterway that flows into the Tombigbee River, located just north of Wood's Bluff. As they approached the creek, they were unaware that they were entering a trap set by concealed Creek warriors. The ambush was initiated when a turkey tail was raised above a log, signaling the attack. The Creek fighters, armed and hidden, opened fire on the unsuspecting Americans. The sudden onslaught resulted in chaos among McGrew's men. Colonel McGrew, a veteran of previous conflicts, was among the first to fall, along with three other Americans: Edmund Miles, Jesse Griffin, and Captain William Bradbury. The ambush was swift and deadly, showcasing the tactical advantage held by the Creek warriors in their familiar terrain.

Bashi Skirmish

In the spring of 1813, tensions were escalating in the Illinois territory as American forces sought to fortify their positions against Native American resistance. Fort LaMotte was under construction, and the surrounding area was fraught with danger. On April 18, two barrel coopers, Isaac Brimberry and Thomas Kennedy, ventured to a nearby knoll known as Africa Point, situated along the Wabash River, to gather wood for the fortification efforts. Their discovery of Indian canoes on the riverbank prompted them to alert Captain Pierce Andrews, the commander of Fort LaMotte, about the potential threat. In response to the report, Captain Andrews dispatched a squad of United States Rangers to investigate the situation. The Rangers divided into two groups: a six-man advance party and a reserve unit that remained behind. As the advance group approached Africa Point, they were ambushed by a contingent of Kickapoo Indians, who opened fire from concealed positions. The surprise attack caught the Rangers off guard, leading to a chaotic skirmish. During the fierce exchange of gunfire, the American forces found themselves outmatched and began to retreat. The advance party suffered significant casualties, with four Rangers killed in action and two others severely wounded. The remaining members of the advance group managed to escape back to the fort, raising the alarm as they fled. Hearing the gunfire, the reserve unit also retreated to Fort LaMotte, effectively ending the engagement.

Battle of Africa Point

The situation worsened for the Americans after the Battle of Beaver Dams on June 24, where a large contingent was captured, leading to a cautious approach that kept them within a mile of the fort. On July 7, 1813, a British and Native force, comprising approximately 140 Native warriors and a small contingent of British soldiers under Captain William Hamilton Merritt, located the buried medical supplies. To secure their operation, they needed to neutralize an American piquet nearby. The British charged the American position, successfully driving them off, but the alarm was raised, prompting a response from Fort George. A few hundred American dragoons advanced toward the British, forcing them to retreat without engaging in further conflict. The following morning, on July 8, the Native forces took position in the woods of the Ball family farm to provide cover as the British began to excavate the medical supplies. At around 8:00 AM, the supplies were unearthed, but the activity drew the attention of the Americans in Fort George. Approximately 500 American troops, including dragoons led by Major Malcom, launched a sortie from the fort. Outnumbered, the Native forces retreated into the woods of the Chourous Farm. In an attempt to flank the Natives, a contingent of 40 Americans, led by Lieutenant Eldrige, was dispatched. However, they inadvertently stumbled into the Native position and were quickly surrounded. The ensuing skirmish resulted in heavy casualties for the Americans, with twenty killed and thirteen captured, while only three Natives were wounded. The American dragoons, who had initially charged the Natives, withdrew without inflicting any damage. During the surrender process, Eldrige fired at a Native warrior and was executed in retaliation. Captain Merritt, concerned for the safety of the prisoners, vowed that he would not fight alongside Natives again if they were harmed. Battle of Ball's Farm

British forces, bolstered by thousands of seasoned soldiers, launched a series of aggressive operations along the American Atlantic coast. Major General Robert Ross led a combined land and naval assault, with Vice-Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane coordinating the naval bombardment of Fort McHenry, the key defensive installation in Baltimore Harbor. The Battle of Baltimore commenced on September 12, 1814, with the British landing approximately 5,000 troops near North Point, about five miles from the city. The ensuing skirmish lasted only about ten minutes, resulting in the swift surrender of the British officers to prevent further casualties. The American forces reported minimal injuries, with only two wounded—an Oneida Indian and a U.S. rifleman. In contrast, British casualties were significantly higher, with reports indicating 14 killed, including a midshipman, and 28 wounded or captured, alongside 139 others taken prisoner. The Americans also seized three British gunboats, one armed with a 24-pounder and a 63-pounder gun, as well as two cutters and one gig. Although the Americans emerged victorious, the British Navy maintained a presence on Lake Ontario, necessitating overland transport for the remaining supplies to Sackets Harbor. Volunteers carried the heavy anchor cable for the USS Superior, weighing 9,600 pounds, over 20 miles, successfully avoiding British patrols. Battle of Big Sandy Creek

In the lead-up to the Battle of Brownstown, tensions escalated as various Native American tribes formed an alliance against the United States, bolstered by British support. This coalition included the Mingo, Wyandotte, Miami, Delaware, Shawnee, Kickapoo, Sauk, Ottawa, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Mohawk, and Chickamauga tribes. On February 5, 1812, Walk-in-the-Water and seven Wyandot chiefs secured a 50-year possession of Brownstown and Monguagon, with Walk-in-the-Water commanding the local warriors. By August 5, 1812, Major Thomas Van Horne led 200 U.S. soldiers southward to the River Raisin to gather supplies for Brigadier General William Hull, who was stationed in Sandwich, Ontario. As Van Horne's troops forded Brownstown Creek, they encountered a formidable force of approximately two dozen Native Americans, led by the Shawnee war chief Tecumseh, the Chickamauga chief Daimee, and the Wyandot chief Roundhead, along with a detachment from the Essex Militia. The U.S. forces, despite their numerical superiority, were caught off guard and quickly overwhelmed. Van Horne ordered a retreat, but the untrained American militia panicked and scattered. The battle resulted in significant losses for the U.S. forces, with 18 men killed, 12 wounded, and 70 reported missing, many of whom returned to Detroit in the following days.

Battle of Brownstown

The American privateers, consisting of the Dolphin, Lynx, Racer, and Arab, mounted a total of 30 guns and had a crew of approximately 160 men. Captain Stafford, faced with the choice of scuttling his ships or fighting, opted to engage the British and arranged his vessels in a line of battle, with the portside guns aimed at the anticipated British approach. As the British boats drew near, Polkinghorne delayed the attack to wait for the remaining boats, but ultimately decided to engage the Americans to prevent them from fortifying their positions. Chief Black Hawk, leading approximately 150 warriors from the Sauk and Fox nations, assured Campbell that the Mississippi River would remain open for American travel. This friendly interaction, however, was soon overshadowed by the arrival of news that the British had captured Prairie du Chien, prompting Black Hawk to rally his warriors for an ambush against the American expedition. Battle of St. Michaels

On November 9, 1813, Jackson's forces advanced towards the village near Talladega. The Red Sticks, prepared for battle, managed to inflict 17 casualties on Jackson's troops. However, the tide quickly turned as Jackson's well-coordinated assault resulted in significant losses for the Red Stick forces, with Jackson's men inflicting 299 casualties and ultimately driving the enemy from the field. The aftermath of the battle was devastating for the Red Sticks, who suffered approximately 300 killed and around 110 wounded. In contrast, Jackson's forces reported 15 killed and about 85 wounded. Following this engagement, there was a notable lull in hostilities, as Jackson's army dwindled to nearly 500 troops due to desertions and the expiration of enlistments. In January, seeking to support the Georgia militia, Jackson moved towards the village of Emuckfaw with a largely inexperienced force. This maneuver led to further confrontations at the battles of Emuckfaw and Enotachopo Creek. After these skirmishes, Jackson retreated to Fort Strother to regroup. With the arrival of reinforcements, including regular U.S. troops, Jackson prepared for another offensive, culminating in the significant Battle of Horseshoe Bend.

Battle of Talladega

As the Red Stick warriors emerged to engage, they were quickly forced to retreat back into their homes, where Coffee's forces closed in, effectively trapping them. The ensuing combat was brutal and decisive. Coffee's troops inflicted heavy casualties on the Creek warriors, killing 186, along with many women and children, while suffering only 5 dead and 41 wounded. Among the captured was Benoit Besayon, a trader with local tribes, who was condemned to be burned at the stake. However, a friend intervened and shot him before the flames could consume him. As scouts reported a gathering of Native American forces, the weather turned bitterly cold, and a snowstorm loomed. When Hopkins' army reached the Indian camp on 24 November, they found it deserted. Disheartened by the expedition's failures, Hopkins retreated, stopping at Fort Harrison to recuperate before returning to Vincennes, where he faced significant illness among his troops. Hopkins' campaign aimed to drive the hostile Kickapoo towards Canada and to further dismantle the Aboriginal Confederacy. Despite the expedition's lack of significant military success, it highlighted the challenges faced by American forces in the region. Battle of Wild Cat Creek

Battle of York

Commodore Porter signaled his ships to prepare for action, initiating a chase. The first British vessel captured was the brig Charlton, which surrendered without resistance. The remaining two vessels, Seringapatam and New Zealander, were armed whalers, with Seringapatam boasting a crew of 41 men and fourteen 9-pounder guns under Captain William Stavers. As the Americans pursued, Seringapatam attempted to engage Greenwich but ultimately chose to flee. Lieutenant Gamble, commanding Greenwich, demanded Seringapatam's surrender as the two vessels exchanged fire. Captain Porter took 89 prisoners, disarming Charlton and sending her to Rio de Janeiro with 48 captives. Action off Charles Island

After a brief chase, the Americans engaged in the dark, firing a warning shot that was met with inaccurate broadsides from the British. Georgiana then raked Hector with cannon fire, damaging its main mast and rigging. As the Americans prepared to board, the British surrendered without further conflict. The engagement resulted in two British sailors killed and six wounded, while the Americans reported no casualties or damage. A total of seventy-five prisoners were taken, but due to a lack of personnel to guard them, Lieutenant Downes disarmed the Rose and transferred the prisoners aboard, releasing them on parole with orders to Saint Helena. Georgiana returned to the Essex, anchored off Tumbez, Peru, on June 24, 1813. On the same day, Captain Porter captured two additional whalers, Montezuma and Greenwich, further bolstering his command in the Pacific. As night fell on 1 September, Master Commandant Johnston Blakely spotted four unknown sails and directed Wasp towards the nearest vessel, which turned out to be the British Cruizer-class brig-sloop HMS Avon. HMS Avon was armed with sixteen 32-pounder carronades and two 6-pounder long guns, while Wasp boasted twenty-two 32-pounder carronades, two 12-pounder chase guns, and a 12-pounder boat carronade. As Wasp approached, the two ships exchanged hails and gunfire. Blakely maneuvered Wasp into a leeward position to prevent Avon from escaping. Despite the rough sea and darkness, the American gunners displayed remarkable accuracy. Within thirty minutes, Avon suffered significant damage, losing a third of her crew and silencing many of her guns, while Wasp sustained only minor injuries with three sailors wounded. After approximately three-quarters of an hour of intense fighting, HMS Avon surrendered. As Wasp's crew prepared to take possession of the British vessel, they spotted another ship approaching, followed by two more. Recognizing the threat, Wasp retreated downwind to avoid engagement. The nearest pursuer was HMS Castilian, which fired an inaccurate broadside at Wasp before diverting to assist Avon, which was signaling distress. The crew of Avon was evacuated, and the damaged brig sank shortly thereafter. Following the battle, Wasp continued her operations west of the English Channel. On 21 September, she encountered a neutral Swedish merchant vessel, where two officers from the captured USS Essex were found. Some of Wasp's earlier prize crew members were transferred to the Swedish ship. After parting ways, Wasp disappeared, likely lost to severe weather south of the Azores.
