The naval Battle of Pylos occurred in 425 BCE during the Peloponnesian War at the peninsula of Pylos, located in present-day Messenia. An Athenian fleet, initially commanded by Eurymedon and Sophocles, was driven ashore by a storm, leading Demosthenes, an advisor aboard the fleet, to fortify the peninsula. With approximately 600 men, including 90 hoplites, Demosthenes prepared for an impending Spartan assault. The Spartan forces, commanded by King Agis, comprised 43 triremes and a substantial land army. Anticipating the Spartan attack at the weakest point of his defenses, Demosthenes positioned his forces accordingly. The Spartans launched simultaneous assaults from both land and sea, but after a day and a half of fierce fighting, they shifted to a siege strategy, unable to breach the Athenian fortifications.

As the Spartans prepared for a prolonged siege, an Athenian fleet of 50 triremes arrived from Zacynthus. The Spartans failed to effectively blockade the harbor, allowing the Athenians to enter and engage the Spartan fleet, which was decisively defeated. This victory enabled the Athenians to trap 420 Spartan hoplites on the nearby island of Sphacteria, including 120 from the elite Spartiate class. The situation prompted a panic within the Spartan government, leading to immediate negotiations for an armistice. The Spartans surrendered their fleet to the Athenians as a guarantee of good conduct while seeking a more permanent peace.

Negotiations in Athens, however, did not yield the desired results for the Spartans. Athenian statesman Cleon rejected their proposals, advocating for harsher terms that would further disadvantage Sparta. The failure of these negotiations led to the resumption of hostilities, with the Athenians retaining control of the Spartan ships and preparing to besiege the trapped hoplites on Sphacteria. The outcome of this standoff would later be determined in the subsequent Battle of Sphacteria.
